Canada’s only desert is located in Osoyoos, BC. The Great Basin Desert in the USA stretches up north into a bit of Canada (the Osoyoos town in the southern Okanagan valley of BC). This tiny bit of area—1,600 acres of land preserved by the Osoyoos Indian Band as a conservation area—is known as “pocket desert”, the only desert in Canada.
There are two museums dedicated to the dry landscape of the area. The Osoyoos Desert Centre is located on the west side of Town Osoyoos at the junction of Highways 3 and 97, while the NK’MIP Desert Cultural Centre is located adjacent to the NK’MIP Winery on the Osoyoos Indian Reserve.
