On New Year’s Day of 2011, I did my first ever ice walk in my life. I went to Jasper National Park Maligne Canyon for ice walking. We saw some ice climbers along the hike. Believe it or not, ice walk tour was open on New Year’s Day. :D
Personally I think it’s safer to do this ice walk with a tour group / guide, since there is a bit of distance to it. If you don’t know how to tell the areas of thin ice, it’s better to follow a tour guide. On the other hand, if you would like to do self-guided ice walk, try Johnston Canyon in Banff National Park (the ice walk portion is shorter).
