Review: Moul Falls Hiking Trail
Moul Falls is a popular hiking trail in Wells Gray Provincial Park, because it is the only waterfalls where hikers can walk behind the falls from one side of Grouse Creek to the opposite side. The hiking trail is 5km (2 hours) round trip.
Since it is a popular trail, I decided to hike solo at around 4:30pm, July 30, 2012. The weather that day was mostly cloudy with occasional thundershowers. Just before I started my hike, a thundershower came in. :-( The parking lot was only half full at 4:30pm. Due to the rain, hikers were slowly returning to the parking lot. This was one of the waterfalls I really wanted to see when visiting Clearwater, so I waited and waited in a hope the rain would stop. After 20min waiting or so, the rain finally stopped! There was only one other car in the parking lot after the shower. I saw two guys from that car put on their jackets and headed to the trail gate and disappeared. I followed the trail but wasn’t sure if I was on the correct trail. Then I saw a few more couples on their way back and felt relieved. By the time I reached the base of Moul Falls at around 6pm, there were only 3 people there: the two guys I saw earlier and me. They managed to walk to the base of the falls, but the currents were too strong and rapid, so they only hiked to the side of the falls. They took a few photos and then took off. After that, it was just me. Kinda scary. I wasn’t sure if I should try walking behind the falls, which was the main attraction of this waterfalls. At the end, I managed to hike to the side of Moul Falls, like those two guys, and took a few pictures, too. :-) Lots of spray and pretty windy as I walked closer and closer to the base of the falls. My clothes were soaked wet! After some photoshooting, it started to rain again. Well, at least my clothes were already wet, so it didn’t really bother me any more. I just hiked slowly back to the parking lot afterwards, as long as the lightning didn’t hit any tree near me.
