Old Wonder Falls is one of the many waterfalls in Columbia Icefield near the boundary of Jasper-Banff National Park. There is a trail leading to the base of the falls. This waterfalls is a long forgotten tourist attraction, after the old Banff-Jasper Highway shut down and the current Icefields Parkway Highway 93 was constructed. The falls used to be a popular rest stop for motorists in the 30s and 40s; however, it fell out of recognition due to the lack of visiblity from the current highway. Check map below for driving direction to this waterfalls.

Map & Driving Direction

Drive to the Big Bend area (hairpin loop) of the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93), 16km south of the Icefield Centre and look for a small parking lot on the right, adjacent to an old road bridge. Walk down the old gravel road for about 500m and listen for the roar. Once you see the waterfalls, do NOT immediately scramble down the steep slope of loose rocks. Instead, walk further down the trail for another 20 steps or so, check over your right shoulder constantly, and you will see a small log lying horizontally across a small trail that provides a smoother, gentle descent to the base of the waterfalls.

Exact location of hiking trail head (parking lot) is indicated by Green Arrow on the following map (click EXTERNAL LINK below to view map) or check Icefields Parkway Travel Guide.

  1. There is a larger, more impressive waterfall upstream from this one (visible from the hairpin curve, heading south)… when walking down the old road, when you get to the curve that goes left (at the waterfall), there is a semi-hidden trail on the right hand side… I was not able to climb the rocks at the waterfall to get upstream, but this trail goes well past the waterfall and I believe it will go to the larger falls… I followed the trail for about 15 minutes.. but had to turn back as it was getting dark

    • I think that’s the same waterfalls if you’re referring to the one on the old road. After turning left at the curve (waterfalls), walk down a few more meters and there is a trail (not clearly signed) on the right hand side.

However, if you’re talking about the waterfalls on the new highway (Icefields Parkway), there is a waterfalls called Sideway Falls at the hairpin loop (big bend).
