Canada Men’s Curling Gold Medal Torino 2006 Winter Olympic Game

Brad Gushue used steady play and one spectacular end to win Canada’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in men’s curling.The 25-year-old skip and his St. John’s-based rink of third Mark Nichols, second Russ Howard and lead Jamie Korab scored six in the sixth end to propel themselves to a 10-4 win over Finland in the gold medal game on Friday in Pinerolo, Italy.

It was the second-ever Olympic gold medal by a Canadian rink. The women’s team led by the late Sandra Schmirler finished first at the 1998 Nagano Games.

It was also the second medal for Canadian curlers at the Torino Games. On Thursday, Shannon Kleibrink’s Calgary rink captured bronze in women’s curling with a convincing 11-5 victory over Norway’s Dordi Nordby, also in eight ends.

Canada captured its 6th gold medal today in Men’s Curling event, beating Finland with an impressive score of 10-4. This brings Canada a record total of 20 medals in a single winter olympic game. Very nice. Currently Canada has 6 golds, 8 silvers, and 6 bronzes.

Men’s Curling Team consists of Brad GUSHUE, Mark NICHOLS, Jamie KORAB, Mike ADAM, and Russ HOWARD. Congratulations to them.

Brad Gushue is a lock to win Canada’s record 20th medal at the Torino Olympics, but he’s also trying to make history in Pinerolo, Italy.The 25-year-old skip and his rink of third Mark Nichols, second Russ Howard and lead Jamie Korab will take on Finland’s Markku Uusipaavalniemi for curling gold on Friday (CBC, 11:30 a.m. EST).

With a win, Gushue would become the first Canadian men’s curler to win Olympic gold. Canada’s women, led by the late Sandra Schmirler, finished first at the 1998 Nagano Games.

“We’re not taking any satisfaction in the fact that we’re guaranteed a silver,” Korab said after Wednesday’s 11-5 semifinal win in nine ends over American Pete Fenson. “We came here to win the gold, and now we’ve got a shot.”

On Thursday, Shannon Kleibrink’s Calgary rink captured Canada’s second straight Olympic bronze in women’s curling with a convincing 11-5 victory over Norway’s Dordi Nordby in eight ends.

Canada Curling won bronze, beat Norway in Torino 2006 Olympic

Team Canada Curling BronzePINEROLO, Italy — Shannon Kleibrink’s team from Calgary won an Olympic bronze medal Thursday by defeating Norway 11-5 in women’s curling.

The Canadian women had lost in 7-5 in the semifinal to Switzerland a day earlier, but came out blazing for bronze. Kleibrink’s rink took four points in the first and fifth ends in a match that was never close. ”It’s still a medal - for us, it’s just like gold,” a teary-eyed Kleibrink told CBC. ”I’m so proud of my team.”

Kleibrink scored four in the first end, stole a point in the second and cracked another four in the fifth end for a 9-2 lead. The two countries traded scores of two over the next two ends. Nordby scored one in the eighth and elected to shake hands. Source: canada.com
