The Canadian Cindy Klassen is the undisputed Queen of the women’s 1500 metres. The 26-year-old from Winnipeg wiped out the competition with an excellent performance that enabled her to outdistance her compatriot Kristina Groves by a good 1”47 hundredths: a huge gap for a sport measured in thousandths. The gold won by Klassen is the fourth in the history of Canadian women’s speed skating, after the distant success of Jean Wilson (Lake Placid 1932) and that of the legendary Catrina LeMay Doan (gold at Nagano and Salt Lake City).
