Located in the sunny Okanagan Valley of BC, 9km west of Town Osoyoos along Highway 3, this rare small lake contains some of the world’s highest known concentrations of minerals such as magnesium sulfate, calcium and sodium sulphates, along with some small doses of silver and titanium. Most of the water in the lake evaporates over the summer, leaving behind all the minerals. The minerals harden to form natural “walkways” around and between the spots. Depending on the mineral composition at the time, the spots will be different colours!!!
Praised as a healing lake in Native Indian culture, this world-class natural wonder has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Interior BC. It was originally known to the First Nations as Khiluk—a sacred site producing therapeutic waters. If there was enough public interest for an outdoor spa in the lake, it would have truly been an oasis in the midst of Canada’s only desert.
