Complications of Body Piercing (Tongue, Nose, Ear, Navel)

This is to follow up with my previous posting regarding Tongue Piercing.

Here is a good article discussing body piercing complications: Complications of Body Piercing1, published in American Family Physician (a journal from American Academy of Family Physicians).

Complications of Mouth Piercing

i want to pierce my nose but how can i numb it so much that there’s no pain at all? because the last strategy i had took forever and left a scar.

btw im 13 and do you think it would hurt more to pierce my eyebrow or my nose?

  5. kalyn said,

im almost 14 and i want my nose pierced or my belly button. im kindof dont want my belly button done because of infections and about pregnancy ( not planning on that) but when/if i do get pregnant i will have to take it out because it gets too tight and hurts and leaves stretch marks after. i really want my nose done. is that a good idea?

Oh my gosh you kids are so young you should enjoy your hole-less body because once you start you cant stop. i also think that if you want to get something done– and this goes for anything and everything — dont get it if you have to hide ot from your parents.. its just a bad idea. But please for heavens sake be young while you can.. enjoy because growing up sucks.

  7. Kristin said,

    April 13, 2007

    To Kalyn,
I agree with Mindee, do not get anything done you have to hide from your parents. You can have your bellybutton done and still have kids (not that you should be thinking about that now). You do not have to take it out. They make special longer more flexible barbells for pregnancy so that the hole will not be stretched and you will not have any discomfort. My best friend has two kids and kept her belly button ring thru both.

    To Jenny,
This is just personal experience and everyone is different but my nose hurt a lot worse than my eyebrow and has required a lot more attention in the aftercare. Also it sounds as though you are trying to pierce your nose yourself. Please do not do that, see a qualified piercer to have it done. This will significantly lower your risk of infection. If the person you go see wants to pierce your nose with a gun, RUN. Most states have outlawed the use of guns for everything except your ears. All body piercing should be done by a qualified piercer and with a needle. It causes less damage to the tissue, has a lower rate of infection (Guns cannot be sterilized so you are sharing germs with everyone that has used that gun before), and has a faster healing time.

For information on piercing and how to find a good piercer go to www.safepiercing.org. This is the web site for the Association of Professional Piercers

Hi, Im 16, and I have my nose, my belly button pierced, and I have had infections in the past, but I have treated them well. I don’t have any infections at the moment. I would like to get my tongue pierced within the next 6 months. Do you think its a good idea or a bad idea?.. what are the things I should be most scared of?

Are you sure the site is credible? Are there research data and statistics on that site with regard to the safety and/or potential risks of piercing?

I got my tounge pierced 4 days ago. It didnt hurt like I thought it would. It swelled pretty bad for the 1st couple days, it is still swelled alittle but not as bad. I have been using mouth wash every chance I get to keep it clean. But when i woke up this morning there was a little pink bump in front of it. It dont look bad or anything, But I am woundering if this is normal. I know alot of people that have had there tounge pierced and none of them have ever had this bump should I be worried?

  13. Jessi said,

To Sue, don’t worry about the bump next to your tounge ring, mine did it too but it should go away soon. It happened to my mum when she got hers done as well. I also have my nose peirced. Just felt like saying that. :d

  18. stefanie said,

    May 27, 2007

If your piercing is getting infected don’t take it out because if you do it can leave a bump on your face. Leaving the piercing in allows the infection to work it’s way out. Soak it in a saltwater solution (1/4 tsp iodine-free sea salt & 8 oz (1 cup) water and that should help clear it up.

    okay.

im 15 guys, and to all you people over 18 that are saying “get it done proffessionally etc…” HELLO! Dont you think that if we COULD get it done by a proffssional, we would? Piercing it ourselves is obviously a last resort. (So stick that in your juice box and suck it!)

I tried to pierce my belly button a few months ago with the wrong needle, obviously, it didnt work. (That was just dumb) YESTERDAY, my friend ordered the correct size piercing needles & pierced my belly button for me, and its fine =]

If you cant order the needles yourself, Chances are if you’re in highschool, theres definately someone who can.

    THAT WHAT I DID!
Everything is going great so far!

umm so, i’ve have my belly button for about 6 months and like there has recently been an lump like near the ring and when i squeezed it some pus came out, i thought it was nothing because it began to heal, recently, my belly has been drying up and i figured since i’ve had this belly ring so long, i would change it and maybe im allergic to the belly ring? i dunno. N e waysi think it has to do something with the dangly b cuz maybe i made a scar? b cuz when i took out my belly ring to change ALOT of pus came out and it became all red, not even light red, it was red like a tomato, n e ways i washed it with anitbacterial soap, and put oilment on it, but i dunno what to do next…should i try sea salt to see the results? or should i go to the doctor? i can’t possibly go b cuz my mom doesn’t kno i dunno what to do? thing is my belly ring doesn’t hurt at all -.-

Okay so i’m 17 and got my nose pierced a week before prom. And i didn’t like the ring i had in….so i took it out and tried to replace it. DONT EVER DO THAT. it turns out that it closed up….in like the 25 minutes it took me to get to the parlor again. So i got it repierced…two days before prom. now, june 20th i have a bump next to/on my nose piercing, and have had it since a couple of days after i got in repierced. i don’t want to mess with it too much. i’ve read a lot of stuff and i don’t know what to use. i clean it with saline solution two times a day and clean it with soap every morning in the shower. HELP!

  24. Samantha said,

    June 23, 2007

I have my tongue, navel, nose, industrial, and ears pierced. I previously had my labret pierced and after that piercing the left side of my lip. The bumps that appear next to the nose usually go away, if your body cannot take piercings it can cause infection, when it is infected or you think it is DON’T take your piercing out clean it with tea tree oil and sea salt water solution. After this if nothing gets better go to your piercer. As long as you clean your piercings correctly you will not get infections.

Amanda - You said you wanted your tongue split, your navel pierced and your ears pierced all the way up. Tongue splits are disgusting, think about it in the future if you want a job, i highly doubt that your going to get one. Navel piercings are very nice and easy to take care of but because you spelt pierced wrong I don’t think you should go near anything like that. As for your ears being pierced all the way up, thats also something you would not want to do *thinking about job opportunities.*

All of my piercings literally did not hurt to get pierced, but they did hurt after the fact. My tongue was the least painful piercing I have, but the most painful those few days after. Make sure that when you do go to get your piercing the place you are piercing it at is sanitary. I suggest that when you get a piercing and all goes well for the first one, go to the same piercer the second time and etc.

Clean your piercings and they will be fine.

I was wondering if I could use the gun to pierce my nose, and then change the earring a couple days later or something? Someone who has their nose pierced, please help me! And my main concern is, how do you clean out nasal piercings? Just with Dial soap and water? someone help me please! thanks (:

is it still likely to get the big pimple-like thing on a nose piercing if you wear a stud earring, rather then a ring hoop…?

Well uh, lemme see I just got my tounge pierced, and it hurts like hell. It’s not painful “oh lord help me ” pain, it’s just annoying. I’ve read around that once the swelling goes down, I should change the barbell, the problem is that I don’t know what size to get. And also where would you find one that small?(besides at the Piercers’) Oh yeah does anybody have any advice on nipple rings? I got them done with my tongue too. And where do I get this saline solution, do I just got to Walgreens or CVS? And another thing about my nose ring, what do I do about the discoloration around the hole? I’ve had it about a month now, and my color hasn’t come back…do you think it’s infected? It doesn’t hurt, or has no creepy, nasty leakage…

    Thanks 4 ur help…:d

  38. Josie said,

    August 8, 2007

    To Emilia

U can clean out the ring with any anti-bacterial soap. But make sure to keep the ring in for at leaset a couple of days b4 u take it out. It wouldn’t be wise to switch’em up while its still healing. If ur gonna use a ear gun, then use a ear ring. And put a band aid over it while ur sleep. After about two weeks u can switch’em up with no problem.

    sup guys!

im 16, from australia and i wanted 2 know if piercing is common over in america with teens? over here piercings are HUGE! almost every girl in my skool has their belly or nose done, girls are starting to get their nipples done too which looks insane.

ive had 13 piercings during the past few years, and like most people i have struggled with infections. here is a list of the piercings ive had an the ones ive got now.

*4 on ear lobe (2 each ear)
*2 on cartlidge (1 each ear)
    *nose
    *tragus
    *tongue
    *nipple
*2 on belly (1 on the bottom and 1 on the top)
    *septum

the most painful piercings out of all of them would have to be tongue, because i was tensing it whilst the needle went through, apparently if you just relax it, you can hardly feel it, my bottom belly, because it has to go through thicker skin and there are more nerves there, my septum, because the piercer did a shit job and pierced it throught the cartlidge in my nose!

anyways, my ambition is to become a professional piercer, so if anyone has any problems with your piercings, PLEASE email me.

    snazziehazzie@hotmail.com

    good luck… =]

Hi, guys, My name is Melody…

And I want to get a nose stud, a Monroe Piercing, a belly piercing w/attached belly chain, and nipple piercings , and tongue piercing.

I wanted to know which hurts the most? And how much each one would cost?

I also want to get a star on my neck, broken hearts on 1 of my breast, a portrait of Marilyn Monroe on my back as well as “Diamonds are a Girl”s Best Friend” underneath, “Material Girl” on my wrists, a butterfly, Jessica Rabbit on my leg, Marilyn Monroe’s signature and lip impression on my right foot, and a quote of hers on my leg.

And I was wondering how much tattoos cost, depending how small or large they are and which ones hurt the most. On my back….Legs,Arms, Wrists…????

  45. Bec said,

    September 26, 2007

Emilia - DO NOT PIERCE YOUR NOSE WITH A GUN. Guns should only be used for ear lobes as they cause unnecessary trauma, especially in cartilage. The jewellery is also wrong, nose studs are usually L-shaped or curved and hook into your nose. In my experience a ring is better for the piercing because you can’t knock it out and it tends to have less chance of irritation. I would also advise that you don’t pierce yourself. But if you do, use a sterile needle and sterile, high quality jewellery (surgical stainless steel, titanium, etc). I am a body piercer so trust me.

    hey stephanie.
okay getting your belly peirced is not bad at all.
like you said u have your nose peirced as well and now u want your belly.before i had my belly peirced i had my nose and to me my nose was way way harder to take care of because it constantly hurt all the time and it hurt worse to get peirced then my belly.my belly didnt hurt to get peirced and to me is the most easy to take care of.in my opinion the nose hurts worse to get peirced then the belly just when u decide to actually go through with it realax and take a deep breath and it will be over before you know it!and use foam bactierial soap everyday in or out of the shower it works really good ive never got infection while using this procedure. ps.i held my moms hand while getting my belly peirced lol.okay well good luck!

it’s supposed to look like a pimple it is infected and you should prob clean your nose ring w/ alcohol and also your nose don’t over do it on your nose with the whole cleaning in a rush to get it of because you will end up burning your skin, it will take of don’t worry mine is infected 4 the 2nd time so no worries just don’t tend to leave your nose ring on dirty places

    Hey Guys and Girls,
I’m 17 years old and I’ve currently have 12 piercings. I used to have my tongue pierced, but that had to be taken out (my mother didn’t apprve much and because she didn’t think I did my homework (which to be honest I didn’t)). I’m thinking about getting my tongue pierced repierced, and I was wanting to know what times of food can I or can’t I eat. My sister (who has pierced everything she has herself (roughly 20 or more piercings)) says that dairy could make the wound become infected and that it should be highly avoided for the healing process. Is this true? What other things should I avoid with exception of the obvious (alcohol, spicy foods, mouth wash, and things like that)? Thanks a lot.

    Okay guys listen up!!!

I have my tongue, lip twice, ears gauged, and septum pierced. Infection is a normal reaction of your body when there is a foreign object put in it, your body goes through a phase when it tries to reject it. If you take proper care of your piercings it will cure the infection when your piercing heals, healing time depends on your immune system. 90% of the time infection is caused by cheap jewelry, buy stainless steel of titanium etc. and your piercings will heal quickly and easily. Now about the little red bumps, that is normal also. The bumps will show up after the piercing heals but dont touch or mess with them and they will eventually go away. If you touch of change your piercings to much or to quickly the infection will get worse and is more likely to cause lots of problems… So, just keep them clean and give them time to heal and you will never have any problems. NOW, REMEMBER… INFECTION IS A NATURAL ACCURANCE IT WILL GO AWAY IN TIME.

Hello my name is Alice, i am 22 and I got my nose pierced about a week ago and it is still sore, a little tender and red.. I also have headaches because of the piercing. I am sure it is infected but not that bad. What are some of the ways I can treat it before it gets worst? and also are there any pictures of nose piercing infections so I can see how they look. Anyone who can help me please email me at alice3204@sbcglobal.net…. I am freaking out becaue I do not want anything to happen to my nose so I look forward to any help I can get.
    Thank You

I’ve noticed the big red bump next to my nose ring too. Try changing the ring. I found out I’m allergic to the metal they pierce it with. And it’s pretty common.

well to sonia abouut your nose piercing, it feels like pulling a stubhorn eyebrow hair, it really does not hurt that bad ….. and as far as taking care of it goes, as long as you do not use bactine, or any other thaing that kills ALL germs it should be fine, using the salt water they giveyou is definitly the BEST thing to do! and the reason you dont want something that kills all germs is because it als kills the new skin cells that are trying to form inside that piercing, and if you kill thoes new skin cells it will take twice as long to heal

hey, i had my nose pierced about a month ago. I had it pierced with a metal stud, but because my school tryed to make me take it out, i changed it into a tiny diamond stud which is barely noticeable. (that was within a week of getting it pierced) after that, it was alright but the hole had shrunk to the new studs size, which was quite alot smaller than the original. 3 weeks went past and there were signs of pus but i heard thats normal in piercings so i thought nothing of it. im now in holidays so i changed my stud back to the original quite easily, but recently its been bleeding and pusing quite alot, i think its infected but i dont know?
how do i get rid of the infection? please help :(

I got my tongue pierced a little over a month ago now. After the first week of getting it done, the healing process was going great, the swelling went down, I was able to eat normally again & everything was fine. :d

One day (about a week ago) I was eating & my ball came off the ring. I bit it a few times, now I think my tongue is infected. :-? I don’t know what to do; take the ring out OR treat it somehow!

Someone please tell me if there is any way to treat the swelling, so I don’t have to take my piercing out! :((

i have had many piercings and the nose one was by far the most painful. after getting it done, i wouldnt reccomend it to anyone. i recently got the stud changed to a smaller one and a lump showed up beside it today. i have called a couple places and they both said the same thing… its scar tissue and if u soak it in the hottest water u can stand, the fluid will come out and it will heal.

to all u kids trying to get peirced without parents knowing… u are fools. dont hide it. if they dont want u to get peirced, obey their rules. trust me, time will fly by. u will be 18 before u know it and a lot more wiser then.

Tiffany, i have my tongue done too. i have had mine for about 2 years. Eat a ton of ice to help the swelling and do NOT take the ring out. that will make it worse. get some crest pro health and rinse after you eat.. everytime.it will get better. Good luck

I’m 18 and I have my nose pierced as well, and there is a little red bump next to it. So far washing it with a saline solution has seemed to do some damage control.
However, on another topic, I’m disapointed in some of the kids under 18 representing the youth as ignorant. Learn how to spell some words, and if you can’t even spell pierced, you shouldn’t be getting anything done. Also if you’re 13-15 you should just wait to get it done. You’re still young and might not want it after a while. If you’ve waited and you still want it, but are still underage, go watch a professional do it, order the correct needles, and get a friend to help. I know from experience, trying it yourself isnt as rewarding as just getting it done.

Well about a month ago me and my friend got our nose peircings together. Hers was infected almost immediatly, mine has just recently started to be. So yea I figure that almost everyone who gets a piercing experiences this…

But Its like that red pimple thing that most of yall have talked about. Im not about to take it out after that money spent and the pain I went through so I looked it up and I found to soak it in sea salt and water. So far I’ve done it twice… Last night I only did it for like five minutes and it IMMEDIATLY appeared less inflamed and the bump went down. but this morning it was back, so I did it again, and away it went. So I figure I should maybe do it like twice a day?!?!
I guess until I cant take it anymore….But it does work atleast temporarily!!!!!
