Tsunami Panic at South Pacific New Zealand Region on May 3, 2006
A strong earthquake struck near the South Pacific nation of Tonga on Wednesday, causing short-lived tsunami warnings in Fiji and New Zealand and an advisory for Hawaii.
The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued the tsunami warning about 30 minutes after the 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck at 11:30 a.m. EDT Wednesday (4:26 a.m. Thursday local time).
All warnings were cancelled about 90 minutes later.
The earthquake occurred about 150 kilometres south of Neiafu, Tonga, and 2,156 kilometres north of Auckland.
“It was a shaker. It went up and down and back and forth. It was very hard,” Paula Chipman, a U.S. tourist in Tonga told CNN.
Tonga, Niue, American Samoa, Samoa and Wallis-Futuna had been included in the tsunami warning, while Hawaii received an advisory.
British Columbia, Alaska, Washington, Oregon and California were not included in the warning.
