High Level, Alberta: UAlberta Dentistry Northern Rotation
On Sunday, May 21, 2006, Claire Ference and I together with two German exchange students (from Dresden University, Germany) went to High Level & La Crete for dentistry rotations. I thought we would take the airplane at the Edmonton City airport but it wasn’t the case. We took the plane at Edmonton International Airport at 3:00pm.

We took Central Mountain Air to High Level. The airplane can accommodate 20 passengers. Very small propeller plane.

Inside the airplane. As you can see, every seat is by the window and by the aisle. You can sit wherever you want. The seats are not assigned. Cool. ![]()

Aerial view of City Edmonton—Mill Woods & Lakewood.

Due to weather condition, our plane flew to Rainbow Lake, Alberta first. Rainbow Lake is a small town of population approximately 1200 people. This picture shows the airport terminal in Rainbow Lake. When we saw the painted sign “Terminal Entry/Exit,” Claire, Thomas, I, and particularly Susi giggled for some minutes while other passengers were silent. People could definitely tell who were the tourists on the plane. Well…what can I say…that’s something you don’t see everyday!!! At least for city boys & girls, like us.
Welcome to the paradise—Rainbow Lake—babe.

Aerial view of the entire Rainbow Lake. Small, isn’t it?

High Level airport terminal. Better than Rainbow Lake, I suppose. Normally it takes about an hour and a half to fly from Edmonton to High Level. Since we went to Rainbow Lake first, it took longer.

High Level emblem. Flame represents the Oil and Gas Industry; Tree, the Forestry Industry; Wheat, the Farming Industry; Caribou, Fish and Wildlife. High Level, Alberta is also a small town with a population of approximately 6000 people. The population size varies with seasons. During the winter, the population increases due to oil mining. In the summer, the soil is wet and boggy and unsuitable for underground oil mining; hence, the population tends to drop. ![]()

This map shows the location of High Level and La Crete in Alberta, Canada. It’s pretty north, further north than Fort McMurray. It’s indeed the gateway to Yellowknife in Northwest Territory. So, going to Yellowknife? Drop by High Level and have a visit.

Our home at High Level, Alberta. Fully furnished!!! Cable TV, cookware, comfort, toilet paper, paper towls, etc. High speed ADSL internet??? It did NOT work! Anyway, I fixed it and now it’s working. ![]()

First night out to get to know each other at Boston Pizza in High Level. I ordered a small pizza but the restaurant gave me a medium one. How nice. ![]()
