This section will be devoted to my past summer research in UWO (University of Western Ontario) in 2005. I took more than 1000 pictures when I was there. Can you believe that? This summer at UWO was one of the best research experience I have had so far. I mean my traveling and living expenses were 100% subsidized by NORTH (Network for Oral Research Training and Health)—a national research program for all dental students across Canada. I didn’t have to pay a single cent to get there. Wasn’t that nice?! Initially I wasn’t aware of that. I asked the NORTH program coordinator at UofA if I could get any funding for doing a NORTH project in a university other than my home university; ie, University of Alberta. He said there could be a max limit to what I could get. I thought…well at least I could get something. It was better than NOTHING!!! Hence, I submitted my application to NORTH anyway. It turned…

out it was 100% subsidized. “Wow, am I dreaming? Is that real?” I kept telling myself.

1. I don’t have to pay for the travel and living expenses.
2. I get paid $500 per week.
3. I can visit the places that I’ve never been before.

A very sweet deal. I’m glad I applied for NORTH. My original intent was to enjoy my summer somewhere I have never been while doing something constructive. This research project definitely gave me the opportunity. I highly recommend it to all dental students, especially those in UAlberta where the number of research projects tends to be limited. This summer was a perfect example where UofA had not a single NORTH project available. I was the only one from UofA doing NORTH in another dental school. You never know…you never know…what you’re gonna get. Life is full of suprises.
