Finding Nemo Dentist Scene: Endodontic Root Canal with K-flex vs Hedstrom
Did any of you watch this Walt Disney movie “Finding Nemo“? If you did, I’m sure most of you will remember the dentist scene near the end of the movie. Do you know what Deb (the small blue fish with white strips) and Bloat (the pufferfish) are quarreling about while the dentist is doing something to the patient?
Heheee….I didn’t know what they were talking about actually, when seeing that movie two years ago. However, our UofA endodontics specialist, Dr. Donald Yu, asked my class if any of us knew what was going on in that particular movie scene. No one knew!!!
Thanks goodness, I wasn’t the only one who didn’t know. The endodontist asked us to watch it again because it’s all about endodontics. Believe it or not. The instructor was right. It’s about RCT, root canal treatment. The famous endo technique “Schilder Technique” is mentioned in the scene!!!
So are “K-flex“, “Hedstrom File“, “rubber dam & clamp“, “Gates-Glidden drill“, etc.
I wouldn’t have understood these endodontic jargons then, but now I know. Hehee… ![]()
I include the movie clip from that dentist scene below…in case you want to watch it again, too. ![]()

Finding Nemo Script
Deb: What have we got?
Peach: Root canal, and by the looks of those X-rays, it’s not going to be pretty.
Bloat: Dam and clamper installed?
Peach: Yep.
[Dentist drills and patient screams]
Peach: Now he’s using the Schilder technique.
Bloat: He’s been favoring that one lately. He’s using a Hedstrom file.
Gurgle: That’s not a Hedstrom file, that’s a K-flex.
Bloat: It has a teardrop cross section, clearly it’s a HEDSTROM.
Gurgle: No, it’s a K-FLEX.
Bloat: HEDSTROM.
Gurgle: K-FLEX.
Bloat: HEDSTROM.
[inflates]
Bloat: Oomp. There I go. I’ll be over here.
Deb: [sighs] I’ll go deflate him.
