These pictures were taken on Friday, August 5, 2005 (my 3rd week at University of Western Ontario for NORTH Dental Research). I asked a UWO dental student to give me this tour. That student was also a NORTH student, like me, and just finished the 2nd year dentistry, like me again.

I didn’t take a lot of pix. Maybe I should have had. We went to see the regular lab, sim lab, dental clinic, endodontics clinic, pedodontics clinic, passed by orthodontics clinic, lecture theaters, computer lab, and finally dental students lounge (leather sofa and huge flat screen TV ).

During summer, London has many festivals. The following pictures depict Victoria Park Festival and London BalloonFest in Harris Park, taken placed on Saturday, July 30, 2005. I went to Victoria Park Festival at about noon, then toured around Downtown London, and finally went to see the hot air balloons at about 5:30pm which ended at around 7pm. By the time I got back to UWO Ausable Residence, it was already 8:30pm. It was a one whole day trip. Totally exhausted for sure, but it was worthwhile. Had a good time. Now sure if year 2006 will have different hot air balloons.

The following pictures were taken on Wednesday, July 27, 2005—my 12th day here in University of Western Ontario. The gallery includes the Health/Biological Sciences Library, a cafeteria nearby that library (where I went for lunch from time to time), and the Dentistry Building (where I passed by the dental lab all the time when I needed to talk to the NORTH Dental Research Administrator). Actually the NORTH Dental Research Lab Complex in UWO is next (almost) to the dental lab, and directly one floor below the dental clinic. All NORTH students were there, except me. Because I’m special…in a good sense. I worked in Oral Pathology, which is located on the 4th floor of Dental Science Building where you can see bright sunlight and sometimes a good aerial view of the campus. I was the only lucky one working upstairs. All the others worked in underground 1st floor where you cannot see any sunlight at all…confined in a tiny little space downstairs. I think I’m pretty lucky. Once I even saw 2 eagles flying over the UWO campus, but I was too slow to capture an image of them with my camera. (My camera too slow, not me. ) Sometimes you can also see fog (or smog that most local residents call it), lightning strikes during raining days, airplanes flying by…etc. Just something that you can see and enjoy….not to mention to get away from the lab work a few sec.

The following photos were taken on Monday, July 25, 2005 during my NORTH Dental Research in London, Ontario. I took these pictures during my lunch break. Basically just toured around UCC (University Community Centre, aka Students Union Building in other universities) and some adjacent buildings. Went to UWO Bookstore. It was a very small bookstore with limited number of cashiers. I wonder how they handle a huge number of students buying textbooks during the beginning of the school year. Very small, about ¼ the size of UofA bookstore. Then went to see the McIntosh Gallery house, but it was closed on Monday! How coincident. Then took a few pix here and there on my way back to Oral Pathology Lab.

Yep, 2005 World Transplant Game at London, Canada. I’ve been to the game. Believe it or not!!! Shown left are my winning medals.

I remember sometime this semester one of the instructors in Diagnostics & Treatment Planning (Dr. Bill Preshing) gave us a lecture on transplants. He briefly mentioned the statistics on the number of recipients per year for various types of organ transplants, such as the common one—kidney transplant. He then suddenly mentioned that there was even a game so called “World Transplant Games. It seems hardly conceivable that organ transplant recipients can actually do sports. Yep, I was there in the game, and the game participants just look like normal people. You can hardly tell people apart who have organ transplants and who have not. Of course, that’s why I could blend myself so well into the game, pretending I was a recipient and got those medals shown on top left.

Below are the pictures I took when I attended the closing ceremony of World Transplant Games at University of Western Ontario in London. It’s truly an international game with participants coming from around the world. The weather was super awesome.

Ps. Actually the medals are not mine. Only transplant recipients are eligible for the games.
