Fluorescent Pig; It’s True! Made in Taiwan for Stem Cell Research

Fluorescent Pigs

Taiwanese researchers breed glowing pigs for stem cell research

A photo shows a fluorescent green pig at National Taiwan University in Taipei January 13. Scientists in Taiwan have successfully bred three pigs which glow fluorescent green in the dark, marking a potential breakthrough for stem cell research. Source: Canada.com

Wow, a pig fluoresces from inside out. All internal organs and eyes are fluorescent. Researchers inject fluorescent green protein taken from jelly fish into pig embryos, and the result is pigs that fluoresce. This definitely has a great potential in pre-clinical trial research. The currently intended use of the fluorescent pigs is to monitor the healing process of tissue following various experimental conditions, such as trauma, cancer implantation, tissue graft surgery, etc. The potential application of this breakthrough is, without a doubt, enormous.

“The Dental Student” Film Festival: Dentistry Humor video clip

The Dental Student

Pulp Chamber Pictures in association with Xylocaine Studio presents

“The Dental Student”

Cast: Tyler Verhaeghe, Sam Tsai, Hussein Khimani
Flim: attached below

This short documentary film “The Dental Student” depicting the daily life of a dental student at University of Alberta Dentistry was proposed by my dentistry classmate, Tyler Verhaeghe. He goes to church regularly, and his church is running a campaigne to raise $300,000 for an AIDS orphanage in Zambia, Africa, and so one of the things the church planned was a film festival which is tonight (January 21, 2006). The festival will showcase films produced by anyone in the young adult group of the church and the admission is $20. All the money from the admissions goes toward the orphanage. So Tyler came up with this idea of patient-dentist relationship and got me involved in the film. I was the first person and the only person he initially asked to help produce this film. The film turns out to be…oh, well, all I can say is…yes, my “dear” friend, Tyler, YOU SET ME UP! So, you’d better win at this film festival after all that I had done and sacrificed!! The film records the real but fun side of dentistry. This humorous video will be a blast at the festival…hopefully. :) Gotta watch it. :d

In fact, on the day of filming, another of my classmates, Hussein, came up and decided to join our production. We have to thank him, because it made the filming so much easier with three people’s effort. This hilarious short film depicts the day to day challenges that a UofA dental student has to face and overcome to become a professional dentist. I hope you enjoy the show! The video is attached below.

Intel Mini-computer with Touch Screen like Palm Pilot / Handheld

Intel computer
A latest mini-sized Intel computer from Apple Computer Inc. with touchable screen. To me, it looks pretty much the same as palm pilots or handhelds. Perhaps it has a bigger wide screen or more memory, thus they claim it as a computer??? :-?

Holoprosencephaly: One Eyed Cyclops Kitten in Redmond Oregon USA

One-eyed Cat

One-Eyed Cat in Photo Seen on Internet Had Medical Condition Called ‘Holoprosencephaly’

PORTLAND — A Redmond woman whose photo of a one-eyed kitten was posted on the Web says she is keeping the animal’s body in her freezer in case scientists would like it for research.

Doctors have a name for the bizarre condition. It’s called “holoprosencephaly” — a deformity that can result in a single eye located where the nose should be. The rare deformity typically results in death. But the little kitten that was born at the Redmond home of 35-year-old Traci Allen on December 28 stayed alive for a few hours after Allen fed it with liquid formula through a syringe.

She says she named the kitten “Cy,” or short for Cyclops, after it was born with the single eye and no nose. Allen says despite the media interest in the deformed kitten, she will not put the body on e-Bay. Source: KPTV.com - Fox 12 Oregon

A rare deformity; neverthelss, it’s not one of a kind. If I remember correctly, this also occurs in human species in the past as well, as illustrated in a medical human embryology textbook. When I saw the human case in the textbook, it gave me some goosebumps. Looks kinda scary to me. :-s
