Ok, a few questions regarding Ilanaaq - the official Olympics Emblem for Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

What does “Ilanaaq” mean?

It means ” friend ” in Inuktitut language. The emblem features an inukshuk, a stacked rock in human form as created by the Inuit people of Canada’s Arctic. The inukshuk was used as a guidepost that provided direction across the vast horizons of the North. Over time, the inukshuk has become a symbol of hope and firendship throughout Canada.

Is “Ilanaaq” an emblem, a mascot, or both?

Hmm…apparently it’s an emblem for now. The mascot actually won’t be chosen till late year 2007. However, the emblem looks like a mascot already, don’t you agree?! People actually confuse the emblem with mascot, including me. Seriously, the official logo looks like a mascot to me.

How do you pronounce “Ilanaaq”?

Candidate cities within Canada

Three canadian cities chose to bid for 2010 Olympic Game: Vancouver, Calgary, & Quebec. Calgary hosted 1988 Winter Olympic Games. Vancouver and Quebec never host any olympics, but Montreal (a city in the same province as Quebec City) hosted 1976 Summer Olympic Game. At the end, Canadian voted for Vancouver to represent Canada internationally as the candidate host for 2010 Olympics.
