Taiwan Hotel Collapses Due To Typhoon Morakot

On August 8, 2009, Typhoon Morakot (aka “Emerald”) landed on Taiwan southeast coast, triggering the worst flooding in Taiwan 50 years.
* August 8 is the annual Father’s Day in Taiwan. :(

NASA satellite image shows deadly Typhoon Morakot slamming Taiwan. Morakot’s destructive force caused a six-storey hotel to collapse. The hotel is in a very famous hot spring area Chihpen. It stood away from the river about 300 meters, but the riverside park had been destroyed by turbulent water, leading to 8 more store buildings collapsed, then this hotel! There were actually a two-lane road and a row of houses between the river and the hotel, but they were all collapsed because of the flood as well.

Extreme thrilling and lots of actions! This is NOT a hollywood movie. It’s very real in front of your very eyes.

颱風重創 金帥飯店跌入”惡水” :nahni: 知本遊客幾已撤離

A typhoon pummeled China’s eastern coast Sunday, toppling houses, flooding villages and forcing nearly a million people to flee to safety. Officials rode bicycles to distribute food to residents trapped by rising waters.

Typhoon Morakot struck after triggering the worst flooding in Taiwan 50 years, leaving dozens missing and feared dead and toppling a six-story hotel. It earlier lashed the Philippines, killing at least 21 people.

Morakot, which means “emerald” in Thai, made landfall in China’s eastern Fujian province, carrying heavy rain and winds of 74 miles (119 kilometers) per hour, according the China Meteorological Administration. At least one child died after a house collapsed on him in Zhejiang province.

People stumbled with flashlights as the storm enveloped the town of Beibi in Fujian in darkness, the official Xinhua News Agency said. Strong winds uprooted trees or snapped them apart, while farmers tried to catch fish swept out of fish farms by high waves.

NASA’s Aqua satellite flew over the 1,000 mile in diameter-wide Morakot and captured an awesome image of its clouds using the Moderate Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on August 7 at 1:25 a.m. EDT. The image shows Morakot’s center about to cross over east-central Taiwan. Morakot is so large that the southern extent of its cloud cover and heavy rains reach into the northern Philippines. According to People’s Daily on-line, ten people have already lost their lives to Morakot’s wrath.
