The Downfall of Wordpress
I don’t understand why sql database collation setting is always set LATIN1-SWEDISH-CI.
First, why SWEDISH? Why?? If anyone knows the answer, please tell me.
Second, it’s very inconvenient to write Chinese in wordpress, because all the chinese characters show up as “????” instead of 汉语/漢語. To display chinese properly, the recommended setting should be UTF8-UNICODE-CI. As a result, the collation setting needs changing manually from LATIN1-SWEDISH-CI to UTF8-UNICODE-CI for each field in the database table. This process is pain in the arse!
Considering how many Chinese are out there, if wordpress can facilitate changing this default setting somehow while users are installing/upgrading WP, then this blog software will become more popular and powerful. Ahead in the game of blog software development.

MySQL is developed in Sweden, and LATIN1-SWEDISH-CI appears to work fine with Western European languages. Maybe that’s why. But I agree, it would be nice if we could easily create multilingual sites in WordPress, and combine, say, Chinese and Frenche — for instance.
