Simon Cowell, the show’s creator and Murs’s mentor, told McElderry he was “gutted for Olly” but “thrilled for you because you’re brilliant”.

McElderry won almost two-thirds (61.3%) of the votes in the final, compared with just over a third (38.7%) for Murs, according to voting statistics released on The X Factor website.

The student, from South Shields on Tyneside, had been the bookmakers’ favourite to win the series.

After the announcement McElderry performed the Miley Cyrus track The Climb, which will be this year’s X Factor single and is widely tipped to be the Christmas number one.

The final instalment in the contest – which followed Stacey Soloman’s departure on Saturday – began with Murs and McElderry performing their favourite song of the series.

Murs performed Twist And Shout, while McElderry – better known for his ballads – gave an upbeat rendition of Don’t Stop Believing.

Luther Van Dross—Dance With My Father Again

Lyrics: Dance WIth My Father by Luther Vandross

Verse 1:
Back when I was a child
Before life removed all the innocence
My father would lift me high
And dance with my mother and me and then
Spend me around till I fell asleep
Then up the stairs he would carry me
And I knew for sure I was loved

Chorus:
If I could get another chance
Another walk, another dance with him
I’d play a song that would never ever end
How I’d love love love to dance with my father again

Verse 2:
When I and my mother would disagree
To get my way I would run from her to him
He’d make me laugh just to comfort me(yeah, yeah)
Then finally make me do just what my momma said
Later that night, when I was asleep
He left a dollar under my sheet
Never dreamed that he would be gone from me

Chorus:
If I could steal
One final glance
One final step
One final dance with him
I’d play a song that would never ever end
Cause I’d love love love to dance with my father again

Verse 3:
Sometimes I’d listen outside her door
I’d hear how my mother cried for him
(2x) I’d pray for her even more than me

I know I’m praying for much too much
But could you send back the only man she loved
I know you don’t do it usually
But dear Lord she’ s dying to dance with my father again

Every night I fall asleep
And this is all I ever dream

The 18-year-old from Westoe, South Shields, appeared in the ITV1 show wowing the judges with his showstopping voice. Joe, who reveals he “stumbled across his voice” while doing karaoke a few years ago, earned himself a standing ovation from the crowd in Manchester with his rendition of Luther Vandross’s Dance With My Father. It’s not the first time the former Pride of South Tyneside Young Performer of the Year winner has been involved in the popular talent show. Two years ago he made it to boot camp, but felt it was too soon and left a few days in. Now he feels he’s ready for the full experience – whatever that may bring. Joe is currently at Newcastle College studying performing arts. He wowed the crowd at the Shields Gazette annual fashion show last month, which raises cash for local charities Cancer Connections and the Mick Knighton Mesothelioma Research Fund. Staff at his former workplace, The Customs House in South Shields, are all rooting for him.

Joseph McElderryIn year 2008, three of South Tyneside’s talented singers were taking part in a musical night to raise cash for charity. Val Dumore, Babs Marshall and Joe McElderry performed at the Marsden Inn Pub in Redwell Lane, South Shields, to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Ms Dunmore from The Riverside, South Shields, was moved to raise cash after being inspired by her second cousin Jodie Symington, 23, who, despite having cystic fibrosis, recently took part in a 12-day hike to Everest Base Camp.

Also in 2008 during the “Music Means Life”, a competition held to raise money to rebuild the teenage cancer unit at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary, Joe McElderry of Coleridge Avenue, South Shields, chose to enter a cover version of Home, by Michael Bublé. “I thought it was fitting because teenagers who are being treated in hospital for cancer are going to want to go home,” said the A-level student.
