Founded in 1818 by Father Norbert Provencher (1787–1853), Université de Saint-Boniface is Western Canada’s oldest post-secondary educational institution. Visitors are encouraged to visit its on-site art gallery, and to view the controversial sculpture of Louis Riel, located outside on the building’s East side facing Rue Aulneau Street.

December 27, 2012: This naked, tortured Louis Riel statue originally sat behind Manitoba Legislative Building, but was removed after a heated public debate over its portrayal of Riel as an emotionally tormented and troubled individual. The sculpture was later relocated to the University of Saint-Boniface.
